Time out for Women is coming to Rochester this year.

Time Out for Women is a wonderful event where you can come an listen to inspired speakers share
messages from the heart.  It is sponsored by Deseret Book, and is similar to an EFY event for women.  It is not sponsored by the church, but all the speakers are members of the church and are presenting messages that apply directly to women and their challenges.  The theme this year is Choose to Become.  Some of the presenters include:  Sheri Dew, Dallyn Vail Bayles, Hillary Weeks and Mary Ellen Edmunds.  The presentation includes musical performances and speakers.  The event will be held on October 21 and 22. The cost for the whole event is $59, if you only want to come on Saturday the
cost is $50.  (If you register before Sept. 22)  If you register as a group of 4 or more, the cost is only $49 for the whole event.  If you are interested in attending or in being part of a group, please contact a member of the RS presidency.  You can spend the night in Rochester,  or just come on Saturday morning.  If you are interested and are not sure you can afford it, please let us know.

"Helping Hands" Service Project... 9.10.11

Dear Branch members,

We are reminding all to please come and be part of the relief effort in Schoharie this Saturday.  We will meet at the Branch building at 8:00 AM for the purpose of car pooling, then at the Schoharie Ward building by 9:00 AM. If it is not practical for you to go first to the Branch then just go directly to Schoharie.

President Standage has ordered food and supplies from the Church welfare system for distribution Saturday. Five local agencies have been selected that will also be involved in this effort. In addition, clean up and reconstruction projects have been identified. 300 "Helping Hands" T-shirts will be on hand with the hopes to fill them with our Stake members this Saturday.

  • Wear work clothes and gloves and sturdy foot wear.
  • Bring a change of clothes for the ride home, and a plastic bag for your wet and dirty clothes.
  • Bring drinks and a lunch for yourself.

The Stake has provided a list of the following items, bring what you can:

For cleaning, mucking (removing mud) etc.:
  • shovels,
  • buckets,
  • rags,
  • cleaning brushes,
  • old toothbrushes,

Sincerely,
Albany 2nd Branch Presidency

Good Habits Develop Good Character

The lesson we missed on 8-28-11 due to Hurricane Irene was going to be on Good Habits Develop Good Character by Theda.  Here are some points from that lesson...

“We sow our thoughts, and we reap our actions; we sow our actions, and we reap our habits; we sow our habits, and we reap our characters; we sow our characters, and we reap our destiny.” A saying quoted by President David O. McKay
We are not born into this world with fixed habits. Neither do we inherit a noble character. Instead, as children of God, we are given the privilege and opportunity of choosing which way of life we will follow—which habits we will form.
Good habits are not acquired simply by making good resolves, though the thought must precede the action. Good habits are developed in the workshop of our daily lives. It is not in the great moments of test and trial that character is built.
“I say to our young men, be faithful, for you do not know what is before you, and abstain from … bad habits.” Brigham Young
In the conduct of our lives we learn that good character-building habits mean everything. The way we live outweighs any words we may profess to follow.
Bad habits are a reflection of our thoughts and personalities, our behavior and conduct. They are degrading to the choice qualities which are our God-given spiritual endowments of faith, honesty, integrity, and uprightness.
Evil tendencies destroy character and ruin lives. When first yielding to sin, one’s resistance, self-control, and character are weakened and further transgressions usually result.
Our great challenge is to learn how to control ourselves. We must learn for ourselves and act for ourselves, being careful not to follow those who are not divinely led.
The human will is naturally inclined toward the right. We are spirit children of God and have born within us the power to overcome all evil practices.
We draw ourselves close to the Savior when we faithfully keep his laws and commandments.
We should become so involved in acquiring good quality traits and participating in character-building activities that there is no time to engage in anything worthless or harmful. Our habits should be those that make us susceptible to faith and testimony.
Maintaining good personal habits which are pleasing to our Heavenly Father will strengthen our character, increase our influence for good, improve our example, bless our loved ones and friends, enrich our lives, and enable us to accomplish those things that yield true personal satisfaction and build peace and happiness in our hearts.

No Sunday Services 8-27-11

Hurricane Irene is forecasted to cause heavy rains and flooding in Albany this weekend, especially on Sunday.  As a precaution, the Branch Presidency has decided to cancel all Sunday services.  Please continue to observe the Sabbath day accordingly, we encourage organized family prayer with spiritual thoughts and or testimonies and scripture study.

We ask that Home and Visiting Teachers check with their assigned members, most importantly the ones who are alone or may be in need of special care.  In case of power outage, see that they have a supply of water and food for at least three days.  Please check in with them before and after the storm.  All should have the Branch Presidency, Elders Quorum, and Relief Society Presidency Phone numbers and in instance of no phone communication, their address.

Emergency Preparedness:

1) Water: for general use you should have one gallon per person for two days.  Boil or use bleach if undrinkable
2) Food: non-perishable (dry or canned)
3) Utilities: know your utility shut-offs
4) Have a flashlight with new batteries available and a battery powered radio
5) Establish a family "meeting" location other than your home in case of separation and home damage.

You are encouraged to stay home and in your houses Sunday unless it's an emergency.'

Sincerely,
Albany 2nd Branch Auxilliary leaders
